BioStation 3: More in Less

When Suprema launched the BioStation 3, the headline figure was a 47% reduction in device size compared to the FaceStation F2 — yet the credential support list grew, not shrank. It is rare for a product to deliver both in a competitive market, and it is one of the reasons BioStation 3 has quickly become the most-specified Suprema terminal in our South African project pipeline.

Deep-learning AI facial authentication

BioStation 3 uses a 1.5 GHz quad-core processor combined with a dedicated dual-camera system — an IR sensor for liveness detection and a visual camera for recognition. The combination enables face matching in under 0.2 seconds at distances of 0.3–1.0 metres, with strong performance in varied lighting conditions and for users wearing glasses or masks.

Liveness detection means the system resists spoofing attempts using photographs, videos or 3D masks — an important capability for high-security applications.

The broadest credential support in its class

What sets BioStation 3 apart technically is its multi-credential breadth:

  • Face recognition — deep-learning AI with liveness detection
  • QR/barcode — DataMatrix, QR Code, Aztec, PDF417, Code39, Code128, UPC, EAN
  • Mobile credentials — NFC and BLE for iOS and Android
  • RFID cards — 125 kHz EM, 13.56 MHz MIFARE, DESFire EV1/EV2/EV3, FeliCa
  • Scrambled PIN keypad — privacy-preserving PIN entry on a shuffled keypad

This means a single BioStation 3 can serve as the access point for employees using face recognition, contractors using QR codes, and visitors using temporary PIN codes — all from the same device.

Network flexibility

BioStation 3 is one of the few access terminals to offer Gigabit Ethernet (10/100/1000 Mbps), which future-proofs it for environments where high-volume event logging or live RTSP video streaming are required. Wi-Fi (802.11 b/g/n) and PoE+ (IEEE 802.3at) round out the connectivity options — enabling cable-tidy installations where a single PoE+ Ethernet cable provides both data and power.

South African project applications

In South Africa, BioStation 3 is particularly well-suited to:

  • Corporate lobbies — multi-credential support handles employees, contractors, and visitors from one device
  • Healthcare facilities — facial access maintains hygiene protocols; scrambled PIN provides a backup credential
  • Education campuses — student QR code access and staff biometrics on the same terminal
  • Data centres and server rooms — multi-factor authentication combining face + PIN or face + card
